Stomach massage is one of the basic exercises in the Pilates Reformer repertoire, but I hear lots of my clients groan when this exercise is mentioned. Why? Gripping hip flexors, tight back, tight shoulder, just too uncomfortable. Some people might not be ready for the full exercise on the reformer. Think about what the purpose of the exercise is: lengthen and stretch the spine in a long C curve and feel the connection to the powerhouse through the springs. I help them achieve the essence of the exercise first on the tower. The Tower gives us a more achievable position, creating a nice connection to the centre as opposed to just powering through the legs.
