Both an Ayurvedic staple: Rice porridge and apple sauce. Eaten alone or together are delicious in equal measure. How you make your rice porridge will help balance the doshas.

Ingredients:

Apple Sauce

  • I used sweet eating apples, so didn’t add any sugar.
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3cm piece of fresh ginger
  • 1tsp cinnamon

Rice porridge

  • 1 cup short grain rice
  • 3 cups liquid: rice milk, almond milk, coconut milk, a combination of milk and water.
  • 1/2 tsp sweet warming spices of preference: cinnamon, ginger, cardamon.

The how to:

The apple sauce is so simple and it can be frozen. Wash, chop and core the apples. I don’t remove the skins. Heat gently in a pan with a little water and spices until the fruit is soft.

Cool and store in the fridge or freeze in usable batches.

Rice Porridge : add all ingredients to a pot ad simmer gently until the rice has absorbed all the liquid and is soft.

It can also be made in a slow cooker overnight. Just add a little more liquid and cook on the lowest setting.

Why it’s so good

Strictly speaking fruit and dairy are classed as incompatible foods, therefore shouldn’t be eaten together. This is why we make the rice porridge with plant based milk.

The rice porridge is particularly nourishing and grounding for Vata and Pitta dosha. Kapha dosha, have the apple sauce on its own with some extra ginger and cinnamon…and maybe a little black pepper.
